SHOOT: Hugh Laurie As TOMORROWLAND Mayor At “it’s a small world” Set At H.R. MacMillan Space Centre

Disney’s Tomorrowland had to wait two days for the sun to come back to film the Tomorrowland Mayor (Hugh Laurie), in a grey shiny suit, holding the hand of the little robot girl (Raffey Cassidy), in a blue dress with her dark hair in pigtails, as they walk into the Walt Disney’s “it’s a small world” amid a crowd of 1964 New York World’s Fair goers. Three cameras, including a technocrane and tracking shot, and 300 background performers in 1960s garb waited in the west end of  the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre/Museum of Vancouver parking lot for the sun to drop below the clouds. “Picture’s up, once the sun comes back,” the director said, as everyone laughed. It had been a long wait, made easier by an impromptu dance party, but Tomorrowland needed the sun to match the light at the 1964 New York World’s Fair set at the University of British Columbia (UBC) earlier in the month. After a few rehearsals without cast, Hugh Laurie quietly joined the backgrounders at the north end. I noticed only because I expected him to be among the mass of costumed extras after seeing him on set at the Wednesday night rehearsals. Tomorrowland wrapped at “it’s a small world” set with sun to spare and then moved on to its next location.
