Published May 16, 2013 on Vancouver is Awesome Update: Tomorrow People production moves here to film its CW series. Pilot shot in New York City. But Intelligence production moves to Los Angeles to film its CBS series. Pilot shot in Vancouver. Five American broadcast networks unveiled their fall plans in New York this week and four of the seven TV drama pilots and one TV presentation we saw filming in Vancouver this spring made the cut for next season. Once Upon a Time ’s Victorian-era spinoff Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is scheduled for Thursday nights on ABC. While Almost Human, starring Karl Urban (Star Trek’s Bones) and Michael Ealy as futuristic human and android police partners, will air Monday nights on FOX after the World [...]
Update: Production moves to Los Angeles to film the series. Pilot shot in Vancouver. CBS dubbed its new filmed-in-Vancouver series Intelligence “The Six Billion Dollar Man” today, a play on the 1970s hit The Six Million Dollar Man about an American government agent Steve Austin (Lee Majors) with bionic parts. It’s an apt comparison. Intelligence is about an American government agent Gabriel (Josh Holloway from Lost) with a super-computer microchip in his brain, one that makes him the smartest smart phone ever. Unfortunately this human with an ability to hack into anything is also reckless and unpredictable so the head of the government cyber-security agency Lillian Strand (Marg Helgenberger of CSI) assigns secret service agent Riley Neal (Meghan Ory from Once [...]
Update: July 26, 2013. Bravo passes on the pilot Rita. Will not be picked up to series. Crew for Bravo’s first original drama pilot Rita turned the east parking lot of the West Vancouver Community Centre into a rich parents’ pickup point for fictional Connecticut private school Cabott Academy today. Adapted from a Danish series, Rita (Anna Gunn of Breaking Bad) is a forthright but witty teacher at Cabott Academy, one with a different view of life than the affluent, overprotective parents of her students. In a scene this afternoon, she walks out of the school’s Learning Annex where she has words with a parent and then talks with the school prinicpal Terrence (Josh Hamilton), who has a big crush [...]
Crew for the FOX pilot Almost Human (formerly Human) built a futuristic coffee kiosk on a sidewalk under the Cambie Bridge to shoot a scene on Easter Monday of masked kidnappers abducting a plainclothes Los Angeles police officer and driving away. I got there too late to see the abduction so I don’t know which actor was taken, but this is probably the officer whom John Kennex (Karl Urban of Star Trek) and his android cop partner Dorian (Michael Ealy) try to rescue from Gastown’s Winters Hotel. Abrams and Fringe showrunner Joel Wyman’s futuristic buddy cop show is about LAPD officers partnered with androids and focuses [...]
Last Saturday CBS pilot Backstrom closed off a block of Burrard Street and set up a giant rain tower hanging from a crane to shoot scenes of title character Evert Backstrom (Rainn Wilson of The Office) in the bright orange slicker coming out of the iconic Marine building dressed as a Portland Police station. From Bones showrunner Hart Hanson, Backstrom is a detective version of Dr. House — self-destructive, offensive, irascible and brilliant of course — and based on the books by real-life Swedish criminologist and novelist Leif G.W. Persson. In the scene, Backstrom (the well-cast Wilson) walked out of the Portland Police Station, stopped to light up a cigar in the rain and then walked north down Burrard Street in [...]
Rainn Wilson (The Office/Six Feet Under) is Backstrom in Bones showrunner Hart Hanson’s CBS pilot, based on the books of a real-life Swedish criminologist. Here are Wilson & co-star Dennis Haysbert filming a scene in a downtown Vancouver alley off Cambie this afternoon. The alley with the Breaking Bad graffiti art that Wilson tweeted this morning.
Futuristic Los Angeles police officer John Kennex (Karl Urban) and his android cop partner Dorian (Michael Ealy) led a team of human and android police officers in a raid to rescue a kidnapped policeman this morning held inside the historic but rundown Winters Hotel in Gastown. This is the first time I’ve seen the buddy cops on set together for J.J. Abrams and Fringe showrunner Joel Wyman’s TV pilot Almost Human (formerly Human) and they had a good time of it — except Urban seemed fed up with being photographed at open shoots in Vancouver. Production moved inside the hotel to film the attempted rescue for the rest of the day and tomorrow morning. Fringe fans know the interior of the [...]
J.J. Abrams and Fringe showrunner Joel Wyman’s TV pilot Almost Human (formerly Human) is filming in downtown Vancouver’s Business District on West Hastings Street, transformed into a futuristic Los Angeles, for the second day in a row this weekend. Stars Karl Urban (Star Trek’s Bones) and Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights) are on set as Los Angeles police officers at the crime scene of yesterday’s armoured vehicle heist. Fringe showrunner Joel Wyman’s new TV pilot Almost Human (formerly Human) for FOX pays homage to Fringe in so many ways. The production uses many of the former Vancouver Fringe crew as well as its production signs BELLY. Some of the set dressing looks familiar too, but with a twist. Almost Human is about a futuristic Los Angeles where police officers are paired with android partners and stars Karl Urban (Star Trek’s Bones) as one of the human cops and Michael Ealy (Underworld Awakening) as an android cop. Neither actor was spotted in the downtown business district for the armoured car heist although they were on set. Almost Human turned the Guiness Tower into Division Tower and Oceanic Plaza into [...]
Victor (formerly I Am Victor) had camera crews on two corners of the downtown Burrard and Nelson intersection last night to film a scene of John Stamos (ER/Full House) as a high-powered divorce attorney waiting on the north steps of St. Andrew Wesley United Church for a young woman coming out of the church and then walking with her to the main entrance where they sit together on the steps. Later crew set up on the sidewalk in front of the main entrance to film closeups of Stamos talking with the young woman. It was a big shoot for the NBC pilot with lots of people stopping and staring throughout the evening until the film lights went out around 11 [...]
Victor (formerly I Am Victor) crew brought their own jungle today to film some brief exterior scenes of lead John Stamos walking in and out of the front door of Pender Medi Spa in downtown Vancouver. Most of the action takes place inside the spa with a night shoot at another location. Stamos seems perfectly cast to play a high-powered divorce attorney in an NBC pilot from the producers of White Collar. The Full House and ER vet can be spotted around town over the next two weeks and hopefully will be back in the summer if the pilot is picked up to series.
