YVRShoots Series – PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS’ Greek God Adventures in Vancouver

Published June 14, 2002 on Vancouver is Awesome

So Greek gods are running rampant in modern America, waging war and fathering children, like young Percy Jackson who discovers in the first film adaption, The Lightning Thief. that the father he never knew is the Greek god Poseidon. In the second of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians franchise, Percy and pals set out to retrieve the golden fleece in the Sea of Monsters to save their beloved Camp Half-Blood, the summer camp where children of the gods are trained and protected.

It’s been fun to watch some of the filming of the sequel these past two months, especially on the Camp Half-Blood sets in Robert Burnaby Park in Burnaby, built on the tennis courts and in the adjoining woods. Teen fans of Logan Lerman, who stars as Percy Jackson, tracked him all over the city on Twitter and flooded Tumblr with hundreds of photos-with, taken mainly in that park in May.

Joining Logan Lerman in this series of adventures based on Greek mythology are Brandon T. Jackson as his best pal and protector Grover Underwood, a satyr who hides his goat horns under toques and his goat legs with crutches; Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth Chase, daughter of the Greek god Athena; and Douglas Smith as his newly-discovered half-brother Tyson, a very tall, one-eyed cyclops.

As in the first film, the fun for adults is the casting of the Greek god parents. Geek God Nathan Fillion plays Greek god Hermes, the god of thieves, travellers and messengers, dressed as a UPS courier in shorts. Here he is peeking out of the prop The UPS Store set they built in late April at the corner of Pender and Abbott in downtown Vancouver. Percy Jackson and pals cross Pender (dressed as Monroe St NW in the District of Columbia), enter The UPS store and line up at the counter to pick up a package which apparently gives them what they need to head into the Sea of Monsters to find the golden fleece.

For once, the fans gathered near set weren’t clamouring for Logan Lerman. They wanted “Captain Tightpants”, as one Fillion fan yelled out. Another got her Firefly DVD signed as Fillion graciously took time to meet and sign for fans three times during that downtown shoot.

Also new to the sequel is Leven Rambin, last seen on the big screen as Glimmer in box office smash The Hunger Games. She plays Clarisse La Rue, the daughter of Ares, the god of war, who is given the quest to retrieve the golden fleece.

Nathan Fillion and the Cast of PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS at The UPS Store Set in Vancouver

I found some Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters set photos today that I didn’t publish of Geek God Nathan Fillion filming his role as Greek god Hermes, dressed as a UPS courier in shorts. I’d been in such a hurry to upload photos of Fillion meeting fans in late April that I forgot about my photos of him doing scenes with Logan Lerman’s demi-god Percy Jackson, Alexandra Daddario’s demi-god Annabeth and Douglas Smith’s cyclops Tyson.

Those of us standing outside the prop The UPS Store at Pender & Abbott in downtown Vancouver couldn’t see much inside but clearly Logan Lerman had a great time shooting the scene with Nathan Fillion. Percy Jackson and pals cross Pender (dressed as Monroe St NW in the District of Columbia), enter The UPS store and line up at the counter to pick up a package which will give them what they need to head into the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical golden fleece and save Camp Half-Blood from attack, the second in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians franchise

The Percy Jackson sequel wraps filming in Vancouver this Saturday as production moves down to New Orleans to film Sea of Monsters scenes on the Gulf Coast. So I’m working on a wrapup of the two-month shoot here for my #YVRShoots series. For Logan Lerman fans, the highlight had to be the two to three weeks of filming in Robert Burnaby Park in Burnabyon the Camp Half-Blood sets. And for us older Nathan Fillion fans, the highlight had to be his cameo as a UPS courier (see the latest on Fillion in Parade’s cover story).

That’s Fillion inside behind the counter.

And here’s Logan Lerman laughing with Nathan Fillion on set.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS: What are they doing to Grover in a Downtown Vancouver Alley?

Is the cast of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters always running? It seems that way but that’s based only on a handful of scenes I’ve seen filmed for the sequel. After Logan Lerman’s Percy and Douglas Smith’s Tyson spent the morning running up the 500 block of Granville Street yesterday, Alexandra Daddario’s Annabeth joined the half-brothers in the 400 block to run into a smoke-filled alley to rescue Brandon T. Jackson’s Grover from a trio of bad guys. This time, Lerman’s Percy Jackson carried a sword.

That’s the top of Grey Damon (The Secret Circle)’s head, the only one of the three young thugs I recognized in the alley, filled with smoke from smoke machines and a green screen. Earlier I saw them rehearsing grabbing Brandon T. Jackson from behind. And later I saw one of these young thugs on the ground. Stabbed by a sword?

Grover’s seeming abduction could be a big spoiler, judging from the prop Washington D.C. taxis and a hundred or so background performers walking back and forth on Granville Street in front of the alley during each take, making it almost impossible for passersby and fans to see the scene.

Crew also attempted to shield the cast with umbrellas between takes but it didn’t work too well with tall Douglas Smith and almost-as-tall Alexandra Daddario. And eventually Logan Lerman couldn’t be bothered, allowing a small group of lucky fans on his side of the street to take closeup photos of him, Smith and Daddario relaxing and chatting on a bench near their marks to start the run into the alley

I would like to see Grover’s satyr legs and horns before Percy Jackson 2 wraps here, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Percy and his friends head into the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece to save Camp Half-Blood from attack by monsters in the second in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians franchise, a series of adventures based on Greek mythology. Filming is scheduled to wrap in Vancouver in mid-June and then production moves south to Lousiana.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS: Half-Brothers Percy & Tyson Running Up Granville Street in Vancouver

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters crew turned SFU’s Segal Graduate Business School into First National Savings Bank of D.C. with some American flags and plaques for a scene of Logan Lerman’s Percy Jackson and Douglas Smith’s Tyson turning and running up Granville Street this morning.

After each take, Logan Lerman and Douglas Smith sauntered back to their marks to start all over again. At one point, Lerman playfully punched the wrapped-in-plastic camera lense. I didn’t get any good photographs of them running, this being Granville Street where buses get backed up with two or three waiting to turn right on Pender St., blocking all views of the action on the other side of the street. Plus dread-locked Smith seemed uncomfortable being so exposed to passersby and others with cameras. There will be more filming this afternoon but I’m not sure if it’ll be visible.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS in Torrential Rain at Camp Half-Blood in Robert Burnaby Park

Tuesday in Vancouver started out sunny but by the time I reached the Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters set in Robert Burnaby Park, a huge black cloud had covered the suburb of Burnaby and unleashed a torrential downpour. And I mean torrential — as in rain-bouncing-a-foot-high-off-the-pavement-of-Edmonds-Street torrential.

That didn’t deter a dozen fans sheltering under a tree next to the Camp Half-Blood set. Nor did the smoke machines which filled the air with their acrid smell and obscured the actors they came to see. When I stripped out most of the smoke from my photographs taken from about a soccer field away, I spotted Brandon T. Jackson and the dreadlocks of Douglas Smith at the back of the communal table in the mess hall. Alexandra Daddario must have been on set too and Logan Lerman could be the blue-shirted guy at the front of the communal table, judging from the stamina of the fans. They sure do love their Percy Jackson, as I’ve discovered from so many asking me for sightings of the actor Logan Lerman on set and downtown.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Camp Half-Blood Cabins in Robert Burnaby Park

West of the amazing Greek ampitheatre set (built on tennis courts) are some charming Camp Half-Blood cabins and ancient Greek signposts in the woods of Robert Burnaby Park. Once filming of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters moves to these sets it won’t be possible to see much, so I did a quick photo walk while I still could.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Films on Camp Half-Blood’s Greek Ampitheatre Set in Robert Burnaby Park

Leven Rambin, last seen on the big screen as Glimmer in box office smash The Hunger Games, showed up on the set of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters looking a little Hunger Games today. Ramblin plays Clarisse, the daughter of Ares, the God of War, and before each take she showed off some fighting skills,  jumping up and down and smacking her black leather gloved-hands together.

I watched her film the scene with Logan Lerman’s Percy Jackson, Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson from above the wall packed with parents keeping an eye on their teenage extras and vuvuzelas sitting on the steps of Camp Half-Blood’s magical Greek Ampitheatre set, constructed on the tennis courts at Robert Burnaby Park. And then I stepped way back to take some photos from a distance, so the quality is not the best.

Run Percy Jackson Run in Downtown Vancouver for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS

The main cast for the Percy Jackson sequel Sea of Monsters had a lot of fun working yesterday. Logan Lerman’s Percy Jackson, Douglas Smith’s Tyson and Alexandra Daddario’s Annabeth jumped on the spot to warm up for a morning scene of the trio running from 500 Beatty Street in downtown Vancouver dressed as the Delaware School of Culinary Arts. And then in the afternoon, they moved a block east for fun scenes with Nathan Fillion as god Hermes in shorts in a fake UPS store. A very good day, indeed.

Fixing the flag.

Warming up for the run.

Nathan Fillion’s god Hermes on PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS is UPS Courier in Shorts

Whoever thought of making Nathan Fillion’s god Hermes a UPS courier in shorts is brilliant. What a great twist on the idea of Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, giving Percy Jackson what he needs to head into the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical golden fleece to save Camp Half-Blood from attack by monsters, the second in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians franchise.

Nathan Fillion flew into Vancouver yesterday to do his cameo but he wasn’t easy to spot inside a fake UPS Store at Pender & Abbott in downtown Vancouver. He may have gone undetected if a friend hadn’t suggested he could be inside behind the counter. And sure enough from across the street through the glass I caught glimpses of him laughing with the main cast -  Logan Lerman”s Percy Jackson; Douglas Smith’s Tyson and Alexandra Daddario’s Annabeth.

And then in between setups I saw Nathan Fillion exit out the back and spotted the bare legs. I’d hoped for those short brown shorts but these are more than fine and he wore them well. Don’t you agree?

A couple of fans got his attention earlier in the day yelling, “Hey Captain Tightpants!” And here he is signing another fan’s Firefly DVD and returning her blue sharpee. Nice Canadian boy that he is despite all his success.

UPDATE: On his second day as the god Hermes, Nathan Fillion filmed in Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park dressed in a sharp suit with slicked-back hair not as a UPS courier in shorts. He cocked an eyebrow, looking devilish, in a photo with one lucky fan who works in the area. And that was a wrap for his cameo on Percy Jackson 2. Short but sweet for the many Fillion fans.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS’s Ancient Greek Cab at Vancouver Art Gallery

Why was there a cab with ancient greek lettering at the Vancouver Art Gallery? It could only be for the Percy Jackson sequel Sea of Monsters, the second in the film franchise about Percy Jackson and friends, who embark on a series of adventures based on Greek mythology.

It  drew a crowd of spectators to the north-west corner of the plaza to watch the scene being filmed with a tracking camera of cast (from left to right) Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith and Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson watching as the cab, with strange white-faced creatures inside, speeds away in a cloud of smoke. Earlier, downtown workers got a kick out of watching crew on ladders clipping leaves to bare trees and rolling out their own grass turf for the shoot.
