SHOOT: Amanda Tapping Directs CONTINUUM in Arch Alley Downtown – Part 2
It’s Amanda Tapping week. Guest star on Wednesday night’s season finale of CW hit Supernatural and Thursday night’s season finale of Vancouver whydunit hit Motive. And directing the current episode of Vancouver-cop-from-the-future series hit Continuum.
Are there zombies in this episode? Here is Amanda Tapping directing Victor Webster as Detective Carlos Fonnegra yesterday looking at corpse in the trunk of a car parked in the gravel lot off Arch Alley. Or as Webster tweeted: “I’m examining a decomposing corpse covered in maggots in an alley full of garbage and grafitti. What did you do today?” The makeup actually seems more The Walking Dead than Continuum. Fun.

Here is Vancouver’s Sci-fi Queen directing a scene this afternoon from the video village in Arch Alley east of Victory Square. After each take Tapping strode out to talk to the actors Stephen Lobo and Magda Apanowicz, and to crew and then briskly walked back to the alley again in her riding boots. Still very much the ageless Helen Magnus of her long-running series Sanctuary.
LEO AWARDS: Film BECOMING REDWOOD & TV series CONTINUUM & ARCTIC AIR Top the Nominations
Last night’s Leo Awards nominations, celebrating the best of B.C.-made film and television, favour Jesse James Miller’s 70s-era coming-of-age film Becoming Redwood, Vancouver-cop-from-the-future TV series Continuum and northern adventure TV series Arctic Air. The many tweets of congratulations to all the nominees today are a great way to recognize B.C.’s creative talent ahead of tomorrow’s provincial election. So please go vote and as the hashtag says, #SaveBCFilm.
Becoming Redwood‘s 14 nominations include well-deserved director and writing nods for Vancouver-born-and-raised Jesse James Miller and performance nods for Ryan Grantham as the young golf-obsessed long-haired title character Redwood; Jennifer Copping (Miller’s wife) as Redwood’s mother; Chad Willett (producer) as Redwood’s draft-dodging, pot-dealing father; Derek Hamilton as Redwood’s red-neck stepfather Arnold and Scott Hylands as Arnold’s basement-dwelling elderly father Earl. Miller shot the Vancouver International Film Festival’s most popular Canadian feature in rural Langley for 24 days in the late spring of 2011.

In the television category, Continuum dominates with 16 nominations, including nods for creator and UBC grad Simon Barry for his season one finale script End Times and for performances by Richard Harmon, Brian Markinson, Jennifer Spence and Liber8 “terrorist” Lexa Doig. Lead cop Rachel Nichols is not nominated but she is American and not considered a BC actor, even though she lives here for half-a-year each season and owns Vancouver Canucks season tickets (what more do you need?)
Over at Arctic Air, bona fide BC actors Kevin McNulty and Pascale Hutton are nominated for their lead performances on the filmed-in-Vancouver-and-Yellowknife aerial adventure series, two of 14 nominations for the CBC show.
SHOOT: CONTINUUM’s Erik Knudsen, Drugs & Bikers on CBC Vancouver Plaza for 2×03
Continuum regularly films inside CBC Vancouver but only occasionally outside on the plaza. In tonight’s episode, outside scenes involvied drugs and bikers. The first, in early March,of young Alec Sandler (Erik Knudsen)’s friends dropping a new street drug Flash (actually Retrievatol from the future) in their eyes. And the second, five weeks later, of Liber8 leader Sonya (Lexa Doig) meeting with a biker gang.

- Sunday, April 28th – Vancouver cop-from-the -future series Continuum 2×02 airs on Showcase. Some of it filmed in Squamish with Rachel Nichols in a big helicopter scene. New York Times’s Neil Genzlinger wrote about his Squamish set visit in TV article praising the series.
- Sunday, April 28th – Red Widow 1×07 The Coke airs on ABC. Marta (Radha Mitchell) learns new information about her husband’s killer. Photos of one of the deaths filmed in Downtown Eastside alley.
- Sunday, April 28th – Once Upon a Time 2×20 The Evil Queen airs on ABC. Hook pretends to help Regina (Lana Parilla) with a plan to transport her and Henry (Jared Padalecki) back to Fairytale land. Big scene of Regina talking to Henry filmed in Steveston. And in flashbacks, the Evil Queen gets Rumplestiltskin to transform her into a peasant so she can kill Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). Village scenes were filmed in Robert Burnaby Park in Burnaby in front of visiting #EvilRegals fans (one from Mozambique). Look for opening scene of The Dark one (Robert Carlyle) & The Tramp (Emilie de Ravin) staggering out of the “Rabbit Hole” pub in Steveston too.
- Sunday, April 28th – Latest buzz from Deadline’s Primetime Pilot Panic says Wonderland (Once Upon a Time spinoff) “penciled in” and Big Thunder a “major contender” at ABC; I Am a Victor with John Stamos has a shot at NBC; Human with Karl Urban”still solid” at FOX; Intelligence with Josh Holloway and Backstrom with Rainn Wilson in the mix at CBS; The 100 still under consideration at The CW but no mention of Blink.

YVRSHOOTS Series: CONTINUUM & Cosplay at Fan Expo Vancouver

A year ago, Fan Expo Vancouver hosted the first panel for Vancouver-cop-from-the-future series Continuum. And what a year it’s been. Continuum debuted on Showcase as an out-of-the-box hit. Almost one million Canadians watched, making it 2012′s number one cable drama here. Since sold to more than fifty countries around the world. Canadian Screen Award, Writers Guild Canada and Saturn Award nominations racked up. A debut in January on Syfy in the U.S. which led to rave reviews from The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly TV critics. A second Continuum panel at Fan Expo Vancouver yesterday. And the premiere of a second season tonight on Showcase at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET. No wonder the cast and creator got giddy yesterday in Ballroom A at Canada Place.
Continuum is part sci fi, part police procedural about a future police officer Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) who travels back in time from Vancouver in the year 2077 to Vancouver today, swept up in an escape by a group of terrorists — Liber8 — who plan to change the future from the past by targeting the corporations that will come to rule the world. Cameron ends up being partnered with Vancouver police detective Carlos Fonnegra (Victor Webster) and tasked with bringing down Liber8, with the unexpected help of teen tech genius Alec Sandler (Erik Knudsen), a boy who will grow up to become the head of mega-corp SadTech and seemingly the man responsible for sending Kiera and Liber8 back in time in the first place.
PROMOS: Sneak Peek of CONTINUUM Season Two Premiere This Sunday – Updated
Ahead of tomorrow’s Continuum panel at Fan Expo Vancouver, Showcase released a sneek peak of Sunday’s season two premiere. I expect this will be what we see at the noon panel in Ballroom A at Canada Place tomorrow along with cast Rachel Nichols, Victor Webster, Erik Knudsen, Lexa Doig, Luvia Petersen, Stephen Lobo, Jennifer Spence and Omari Newton
Some questioned whether star Rachel Nichols would be able to attend the Continuum panel since her UFC-style femae fight film Race debuts at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this weekend too, but she told The Province’s Glen Schaefer she will attend Fan Expo, take in the Saturday night Vancouver Canucks game with her season ticket and then fly to New York on Sunday for the Race premiere.

SHOOT: Rachel Nichols & 250 Protester/Police Extras Film CONTINUUM S2 in Gastown’s Blood Alley
Continuum staged a big protest scene in Gastown’s Blood Alley today with Vancouver-cop-from-the-future Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) shoved around in a crowd as hundreds of protester extras battled police extras in full riot gear. In one scene, Kiera ran out of the melee in her black high-tech cat suit, boots and a sky-blue jacket. But this was a rare sighting. Most of the time you couldn’t see her in the throng of up to 250 background performers.
Luckily, there’s another chance to see her at the Continuum panel at Fan Expo Vancouver this Saturday, April 20th, at Canada Place. Cast Rachel Nichols, Victor Webster, Erik Knudsen, Lexa Doig, Luvia Petersen, Stephen Lobo, Jennifer Spence and Omari Newton are scheduled to be there at noon in Ballroom A. And fans are promised a sneak peek of season two, which premieres this Sunday, April 21st, at 9 p.m. on Showcase in Canada.
SHOOT: Tahmoh Penikett & Victor Webster Film CONTINUUM S2 at Vancouver Art Gallery on Easter Monday
Corrupt Vancouver politician Jim Martin (Tahmoh Penikett) returns to Continuum in the second season. We met him in the seventh episode, The Politics of Time, when Liber8 killed the investigative reporter Alicia Fuentes (Pascale Hutton) looking into the financing of Martin’s campaign to be head of the local dock workers union. Detective Carlos Fonnegra (Victor Webster) investigates Alicia’s murder without telling his Vancouver-police-partner-from-the-future Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) that the murder victim is the woman he slept with the night before, making him the prime suspect and testing Kiera’s loyalty. It proved to be a tangled web of old friendships gone wrong so it’s no wonder that Carlos isn’t friendly with Jim Martin when they meet on the north steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery this season.
Continuum filmed for three days outside and inside the Vancouver Art Gallery last week, mainly in an old courtroom at the south end. Could this be the trial of young Liber8 apprentice Julian Randol (Richard Harmann)?
