YVRSHOOTS Series: New U.S. Shows ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND, ALMOST HUMAN, INTELLIGENCE & THE 100

Published May 16, 2013 on Vancouver is Awesome

Five American broadcast networks unveiled their fall plans in New York this week and four of the seven TV drama pilots and one TV presentation we saw filming in Vancouver this spring made the cut for next season. Once Upon a Time ’s Victorian-era spinoff Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is scheduled for Thursday nights on ABC. While Almost Human, starring Karl Urban (Star Trek’s Bones) and Michael Ealy as futuristic human and android police partners, will air Monday nights on FOX after the World Series. Intelligence starring Josh Holloway (Lost’s Sawyer) as “The Six Billion Dollar Man” will debut on CBS on Monday nights next year. And post-apocalyptic The 100 about a hundred juvenile delinquents sent back to Earth from space almost a hundred years after nuclear disaster is slated for early 2014 on The CW. Not a bad outcome, considering there were  fifty odd drama pilots vying for thirty prime time slots this year (double the 15 drama openings  from last year after a slew of cancellations including locally-filmed Emily Owens, M.D., Cult and Red Widow).

Unfortunately, even in a big year for new dramas, some star vehicles didn’t make the cut. Uncle Jessie won’t be returning to film in Vancouver anytime soon. John Stamos (Full House/ER)’s  pilot Victor stayed in the mix until the end but NBC opted not to put the drama about a high-powered L.A. divorce attorney, who helps his clients find new faith in life, on its schedule.

Nor will Dwight Schrute be back. CBS held onto Rainn Wilson (The Office)’s pilot Backstrom in round after round of cuts but ultimately passed on the drama about a Portland detective version of Dr. House — self-destructive, offensive, irascible and brilliant.

UPFRONT: Post-Apocalyptic Series THE 100 to Debut on The CW in 2014

Based on an upcoming book series, The 100 is about a hundred juvenile delinquents sent back to Earth from space almost a hundred years after nuclear  war to see if the planet is habitable. And judging from the trailer filmed in our local forests, at least one section of the planet has recovered nicely. The CW showed the clip at today’s Upfront for advertisers in New York to enthusiastic response and announced it will schedule the show for mid-season.

Only the pretty ones survive, joked Television without Pity. The filmed-in-Vancouver show has plenty of them: Eliza Taylor, Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy), Henry Ian Cusick (Lost), Marie Avgeropoulos (below), Paige Turco, Kelly Hu (Arrow),

SHOOT: ARROW’s Archer Showdown on Hudson’s Bay Roof for Tonight’s Season Finale

Two Men. Two Bows. One Roof.

Emerald Archer vs Dark Archer for the season finale.

A late April rehearsal of Hudson’s Bay rooftop fight scene at dusk in downtown Vancouver, part of Arrow’s final shoot of the season.

Arrow has been building to the ultimate showdown between Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman)’s alter egos for much of the season. Is this it? If so, who will be victorious? It didn’t look good for The Hood from my vantage high above in the Vancouver Lookout at Harbour Centre (often featured in Arrow cityscapes).

STUNTS: ARROW’s Top 20 Action Moments Countdown

Arrow does have the best fight scenes on TV right now - Ken Tucker, former EW TV critic.

No argument from me. Arrow has my favourite fight scenes and stunts on TV.

Arrow Fight Designer James “Bam Bam” Bamford recently presented a Top 20 Action Moments Countdown in three videos. Absent are any sequences from tonight’s season finale so there is no spoiler alert.

The Top 5 includes my personal favourite- the huge Parkour Sequence with Stephen Amell and stunt double Simon Burnett filmed in Gastown.

LEO AWARDS: Film BECOMING REDWOOD & TV series CONTINUUM & ARCTIC AIR Top the Nominations

Last night’s Leo Awards nominations, celebrating the best of B.C.-made film and television, favour Jesse James Miller’s 70s-era coming-of-age film Becoming Redwood, Vancouver-cop-from-the-future TV series Continuum and northern adventure TV series Arctic Air. The many tweets of congratulations to all the nominees today are a great way to recognize B.C.’s creative talent ahead of tomorrow’s provincial election. So please go vote and as the hashtag says, #SaveBCFilm.

Becoming Redwood‘s 14 nominations include well-deserved director and writing nods for Vancouver-born-and-raised Jesse James Miller and performance nods for Ryan Grantham as the young golf-obsessed long-haired title character Redwood; Jennifer Copping (Miller’s wife) as Redwood’s mother; Chad Willett (producer) as Redwood’s draft-dodging, pot-dealing father;  Derek Hamilton as Redwood’s red-neck stepfather Arnold and Scott Hylands as Arnold’s basement-dwelling elderly father Earl. Miller shot the Vancouver International Film Festival’s most popular Canadian feature in rural Langley for 24 days in the late spring of 2011.

In the television category, Continuum dominates with 16 nominations, including nods for creator and UBC grad Simon Barry for his season one finale script End Times and for performances by Richard Harmon, Brian Markinson, Jennifer Spence and Liber8 “terrorist” Lexa Doig. Lead cop Rachel Nichols is not nominated but she is American and not considered a BC actor, even though she lives here for half-a-year each season and owns Vancouver Canucks season tickets (what more do you need?)

Over at Arctic Air, bona fide BC actors Kevin McNulty and Pascale Hutton are nominated for their lead performances on the filmed-in-Vancouver-and-Yellowknife aerial adventure series, two of 14 nominations for the CBC show.

GREEN LIT: The CW Orders Post-Apocalyptic Pilot THE 100 to Series

The CW ordered sci-fi post-apocalyptic pilot The 100 to series today. It’s set 97 years after nuclear war wipes out life on Earth. A spaceship containing the only human survivors sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth to see whether the planet can be re-colonized. As you’d expect, The 100 has a big cast: Eliza Taylor, Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy), Henry Ian Cusick (Lost), Marie Avgeropoulos, Paige Turco, Kelly Hu (Arrow), Christopher Larkin, and Thomas McDonell. But I don’t know much more about it because the bulk of production was on a huge closed set in Langley.

The other filmed-in-Vancouver CW pilot Blink — about a girl whose father is in a coma — was reportedly well received but not picked up because it doesn’t fit The CW brand.

PROMOS: Images of SUPERNATURAL 8×21 The Great Escapist

Tomorrow night’s Supernatural introduces Metatron, the scribe of God (Curtis Armstrong of Revenge of the Nerds) to the mythology. Why do Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) seek him out? Well, with prophet Kevin (Osric Chau) still missing and more than a little crazy,  they need help to fill in the holes in Kevin’s research. The brothers head to a casino in Colorado (played by the Stanley Park Pavilion) to find  this mysterious recluse, who should be able to uncover the Third Trial for them.
